Dambulla cave temple (Sinhalese: Dam̆būlū Len Vihāraya,)as well identified as the Gold Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, located in the middle part of the country. kilometres (45 mi) north of Kandy. It is the largest and best-. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains.There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding place.

                                      Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which include statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of gods and goddesses. The latter include Vishnu and the Ganesha. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square metres. Depictions on the walls of the caves include the temptation by the demon Mara, and Buddha's first sermon.


Prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as there are burial sites with human being skeletons about 2700 years old in this place, at Ibbankatuwa near the Dambulla cave complexes.


Dabulla Cave Temple
Located at an elevation of 1118 feet from the sea level rises a huge rock from the surrounding plains of Dambulla of 600 feet high and over 2000 feet in length. It is home to the Worlds most acclaimed Cave complex of magnificent Buddha Images and Rock Art of vivid colors and designs constructed and painted from around 2nd Century BC (Anuradhapura era ) and continued up to the Kandyan era of the 18th Century. Sinhalese people call it as ' Dambulu Gala' ( Dambulla Rock) and the Temple is called as the ' Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya' (Golden Rock Dambulla Temple).
